ALICE stands for ALarge Ion Collider Experiment, one of the world's largest experiments in microworld physics. It is one of the four main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) near Geneva, Switzerland. More than 1,000 physicists, technicians and engineers are involved in the project, along with more than 200 PhD students from 105 institutions in 30 countries.
The Czech participation in the ALICE Experiment includes the design and construction of the already installed Silicon Drift Detector system (SDD), the Inner Tracking System (ITS) and the development of the future forward electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter (FOCAL). The analysis of data from the ALICE experiment, the identification of individual particles, their properties, and their relevance to understanding the fundamental properties of matter is an activity of many workers.
